Perth Scorcher may not be having their opener’s services, maybe for the rest of the season and more. Michael Klinger, all-time highest scorer in Big Bash League may not be available after this sad news.
Cindy Klinger, wife of Michael went in for a scan to inquire about some pain in her back, this week. She was in a state of shock after hearing the news of breast cancer. Michael Klinger is a key member of Scorchers squad but also a husband and father to three. So in order to look after his children and wife, when she is ill, he may not play cricket until further notice.
In an interview with The West Australian Newspaper, Klinger said that his wife had a routine scan in last week. She was suffering from some pain in the back and no treatment was doing any good to her. So she went for a checkup followed by a scan. After a brief scan, the doctor wanted to examine in detail, three spots of her vertebrae. And moments after, the husband-wife were told about the disease she is suffering from. Michael also said that at this very moment, playing and thinking about cricket is a secondary task to him. Although, Cindy wants him to keep playing as she thinks it will be a good distraction for her from the disease. But Klinger says he will choose whatever he feels right at the moment.
He played fantastically in the last season and made 334 runs. In the final match of last year’s edition, Michael Klinger made an unbeaten and important 71 run which helped his team win their third Big Bash League title. As a result of his brilliant performance, Klinger was picked for a T-20 international debut against Sri Lanka.
In the meanwhile, Scorchers may be in trouble at the top if he misses out. Justin Langer, coach of Perth Scorchers may find himself doing a lot of thinking to replace Klinger. His last year alternate, Same Whiteman is unavailable this season already due to a prolonged finger injury. Mitchel Marsh and Cameroon Bancroft are engaged in international duty.
There are options available in the form of Josh Inglis and Josh Philippe. Inglis may be the preferable choice because he batted for Cricket Australia XI in List-A matches.
