Misbah – The Last Chapter: Pride Test Career of Misbah Ul Haq Niazi

Finally a protracted remarkable career of 16 years comes to an end. Misbah ul haq who started his prolific test career at the age of 27 in 2001 playing against New Zealand. King Misbah show his sumptuous skills when he scored his first century against India in 2007 after playing 7 test matches.

It was not enough to impress selectors to earn him place in regular team in which players such as Younis khan, Inzimam Ul Haq, Mohammad Yousuf were playing who weren’t ready to make a way for inexperienced Misbah in the team. However, he kept playing test matches in patches until 2010.

The turning point of his career arrived when he was called by PCB when Pakistan Team was under serious captaincy crisis. He was roped as Captain of the sinking ship of Pakistan. Cool and Smart Misbah showed off his skills when he won 2 successive series for Pakistan in 2011 defeating Bangladesh in their home ground and White Washing England in UAE.

Misbah achievements as a player is not hidden from any one. He is one of the most superlative players Pakistan had ever produced in Test Cricket scoring 5000+ runs with an outstanding average of nearly 47 and 10 hundreds. His prodigious records includes joint second fastest individual century against Mighty Aussies. He also owns the record for most runs by a Pakistan Test Captain along with most test sixes by Pakistani.

It would be right to call him savior of scrambling Pakistan batting lineup. His some memorable batting performances include 68 not out against Sri Lanka at Sharjah clinching an extraordinary run chase. This 42-Year-old gentlemen showed the world that age don’t matters if you want something to do. He scored a fantastic hundred against England in 2016 when he encountered them in their home ground for the first time as captain. His other brilliants performances proved his criticism wronged. Since his captaincy charge he had scored 2nd most fifties by a Batsmen in Test Cricket. He also had scored most runs at no 5 by Test Captain.

He achieved more as a Test Captain than a Test Player as he emerged himself as most successful Pakistani Test Captain ever. His substantial captaincy abilities made him his team best in the world reaching No 1 Position in 2016 receiving test mace for the first time. He had 25 test wins to his record surpassing Imran khan of 14 test wins. He also had lead his team in 49 matches (3rd most matches as a captain by Asian). He is the Only Asian captain to win 4 or more test matches vs England.

Captain Cool and Calm also had helped Pakistan to produce one of the finest test bowler in face of Yasir Shah. He had also a milestone of making a ton by oldest test captain in his cabinet. Under his leadership Pakistan also holds the record of Undefeated series in 8 Test series in the UAE.

Some Major Captaincy Series Includes:

  • Won 2-0 (2) vs Australia in UAE.
  • Won 3-0 (3) vs England in UAE
  • Drew 1-1 (3) vs New Zealand in UAE.
  • Won 1-0 (2) vs Bangladesh AWAY.
  • Won 2-1 (3) vs Sri Lanka AWAY.
  • Won 2-0 (3) vs England in UAE.
  • Drew 2-2(4) vs England in England.

Misbah has always been in the eye of the storm facing immense criticism for not ambushing as a captain and playing defensively as a batsman. But the emphatic wins against England in 2012, Australia in 2014, and the immaculate wins against against Sri lanka in 2013 at Sharjah speaks otherwise. Also as a player Misbah holds the record for most sixes, fastest test fifty, joint second fastest hundred which manifest that he was not defensive rather a supremely brave warrior. Misbah critics have always been unjustifiably severe and appalling to him but he never proclaimed fearsome voices against them rather always retorted them with extremely brilliant performance with the bat and leading his team to victories.

On 6th April 2017 King Iron Misbah announced his retirement from International Cricket. Pakistan tour to Caribbean would be his last chapter of an elongated journey. He looks sharp as always in the first 2 test matches of 3 matches series in which he scored 2 scores of 99’s in 2 matches in a row. This also made him achieving the record of most 99’s by a player in Test Cricket. Not only this he also has a golden opportunity as Pakistan is only one match away from defeating Windies to seal a Win in Test Series for the first time in West Indies. Last Test match of the series starts next week and this is going to be memorable one for Pakistan as two backbones are going to be seen for the last final team in Pakistan Jersey.
