South Africa had a 100% record in the tournament and they continued their work as they defeated India defending a diffident total of 130. A dead rubber turned out to be an exciting thriller.
On a spin wicket of trent bridge where every batsmen was found struggling AB scored an outstanding 50 to set a low total of 131. India solid start worried South Africa as their openers were middling the bowl quite beautifully and were bashing Proteas fast bowling badly but soon the situation changed as India couldn’t handle the spin bowling of South Africa. A match where India was looking favorites in the midway ended up on losing side.
This was an extraordinary win by Green shirts. India was also in need to defeat proteas by an overwhelming margin to knock them out of the tournament but they couldn’t do so as south Africa clinched the victory claiming a semifinal vs Pakistan

This win goes down in the history books as one of the finest victory of proteas as they defeated the minnows by an immaculate margin of 130 runs which is the second highest margin of victory in this format.
South Africa summoned up a mighty total of 211 which was their highest at that time. It was looking tough for Scotland but nobody would have thought of an outstanding performance of proteas by bowl too as they bowled out Scotland on 81 runs only. A master class heroic innings for AB (79 off 39) and blistering bowling performance by Botha and Steyn helped SA in clinching a memorable win.
This victory also enhanced the proteas confidence as they were on a winning streak and were the favorites to win the tournament.
2. ICC World T20, Match 26, Group 1: England vs South Africa at Chittagong, March 29, 2014
This was a remarkable victory for South Africa not only in the context of the game but also as Ab de Villiers returned to captaincy in rousing fashion making 69 off 28 balls. South Africa set a mammoth total for England to chase which was also the biggest total of the tournament.
The fact that the highest total ever chased successfully against proteas in this format was 169 indicated how tough the task was. A pretty good total of 197 was put on board by SA which included Amla top order batting and middle order cameo in last few overs. Parnell fearsome bowling forced England to get on first gear after playing with RR of 10 in starting overs.
England was looking threatening as buttler and bopara accelerated and bought England closer to a win but it didn’t work out. Despite that 22 runs were required in last over England lost by just only 3 runs. Though England showed a lot of resistance as they come mighty close to the target but wasn’t able to finish off it in style. With this win proteas knocked out England from the tournament and penetrated their way into the semis.
1. ICC World T20, Match 18, Group 1: New Zealand vs South Africa at Chittagong, March 24, 2014
Well if you talk about nail biting matches and thrilling finishes then this match must be on the top of the list. South Africa batted first and set up a galloping total of 170 for New Zealand. 170 plus total had never been successfully chased against proteas and it remained that way.
It turned out to be an epic battle and went right down to the wire with New Zealand just needing 7 off the last over which they unfortunately couldn’t manage and lost by 3 runs. Spearhead bowling death bowling performance was turning point the game specially Steyn middle order and last over bowling. Although NZ quite well anchored the innings in the beginning but couldn’t finished it off.
Last over was an sensational thriller, one of the most entertaining one in the history of ICC World T20 Tournament as only 3 runs were require on last bowl which was successfully defended by steyn gun. This was a tight match and nail bitter one as a bowler became a finisher in the batting dominant tournament.
These were some of the outstanding performances of SA in ICC World T20. Sadly this team who had showed a fantastic all round display in some games couldn’t carry out a consistently that results in choking.
