Big Bash League 2017-18 kicked off with Sydney Thunders thundering at the Sydney Showground Stadium. Shane Watson after winning the toss for Sydney Thunders decided to go for the chase.
Sydney Sixers had a flying start making 55 runs from the powerplay after losing just a single wicket of Jason Roy(2 off 5). Sam Billings was the highest run getter from Sydney Sixers who scored 32 runs off 21 balls and got run out by McClenaghan in the 19th over at the score of 139. However Sydney Sixers managed to put a decent total of 149 for the loss of 9 wickets on the board.
Fawad Ahmed was the key bowler from Sydney Thunders just gave away 11 runs in his 4 overs and took 2 wickets at an economy rate of 2.75 in his spell. M McClenaghan contributed pretty well with the ball and gained the match figures of 2 for 25 in his 4 overs. Shane Watson went expensive in his single over giving away 15 runs and was charged by Maddinson.
Shane Watson then bludgeoned 77 runs off 46 balls repairing the dent of his bowling. His cameo included 6 fours and 6 sixes. His magnificent knock earned him man of the match. Watson had to play fast covering his partner Patterson’s Slow knock of 29 runs off 37 balls. Despite of providing a solid start by Watson, Thunders struggled in the late overs. They were required to chase 26 from last 3 overs but the back to back wickets of Gibson and Watson brought them on the back foot.
It was then left to AJ Nair and AC Blizzard to take thunders to victory. Both contributed well and scored the remaining 24 runs of 13 balls targeting Sean Abbot for three boundaries in the final over of the match.
DR Sams was the pick of the bowler who picked up 4 wickets in his 4 overs giving away 14 runs. His key wickets included the ones of Gibson and Watson in the 18th over. Unfortunately his efforts with the ball couldn’t win his team the match.
